Business scene is a-changin’ – again!

If your time to you is worth savin', then you better start swimmin',
Or you'll sink like a stone, for the times they are a-changin'
folk song legend Bob Dylan

Have you noticed deeper, wider tables with the international symbol for disability at some McDonald’s eateries, or some mall food courts.  They accommodate wheelchairs so the disabled person can come close to the table and not injure the legs of their dining companions with the wheelchair leg stands.  It’s “reasonable accommodation” under the American with Disabilities Act and calls to mind Dylan’s admonition.

After all, 54 million Americans are deemed to be “disabled.”  Begin with Robert David Hall, the coroner on TV’s “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” – he lost parts of both legs in a car accident.  There’s “Lt. Columbo” star Peter Falk, with a glass eye; Tom Cruise is dyslexic; Dana Elcar from the “MacGyver” series, is blind; actor Danny Glover has epilepsy; and the magnificent voice of “Darth Vader,” James Earl James, had a pronounced stutter.

MSNBC Interactive reported that by age 65, one in three Americans has some form of vision impairment.  The four most common eye diseases facing seniors are cataracts, glaucoma, age-related Macular Degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

How do you attract the disability community if your brochures, pamphlets, letters, menus, promotional materials are too fancy, too small, and too hard to read?

Of the 54 million Americans who have a long-term disability...
  • 73% are the heads of households
  • 46% are married
  • 58% own their own homes
  • 77% have no children
  • 48% are principal shoppers
According to a General Accounting Office report, implementing the access provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act has increased revenue in the hotel and hospitality industry 12%.  Companies marketing to people with disabilities can reach four in every 10 consumers.  Three in four adults say they would be likely to switch to a brand associated with a "good cause," as disclosed by a Cone/Roper Cause-Related Marketing Trends Report.

As an individual business owner, a manager, a corporate officer, are you prepared to take advantage of opportunities presented by a marketplace encompassing $200 billion in disposable income?  Able Me & Associates! - some with disabilities and ALL of them with disability marketing experience and expertise - can help you expand your profit potential.  Call on us.  We are ABLE!
