PARAMUS, NJ - Herb Drill, (right) of Jacksonville, Fla., former Philadelphia journalist and now editor of www.NotAccessible.com, will be among the panelists for the seventh annual World Congress & Expo on Disabilities (WCD Expo, www.wcdexpo.com).
WCD Expo will be held Friday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 11th and Market Sts., in Philadelphia.
WCD Expo is the largest and foremost event dedicated to people with disabilities and all who are affected, such as family members, friends, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and educators. More than 200 exhibitors will present products and services designed to ease and enrich the lives of individuals facing a range of challenges. Show highlights cover introductions of the latest consumer and healthcare sector innovations, including the world debut of an automatic transport and retrieval system (ATRS) from Freedom Lift, of Green Lane, Penna. Because Freedom Lift offered its ATRS “proof of concept” at WCD Expo 2005, anticipation is high for the rollout. “Another winner, we feel, will be an exhibit showcasing the works of professional artists with disabilities,” said William Schwaninger, president and CEO of WCD Expo Inc. “This component appears in conjunction with All About Art at MossRehab, an international exhibit and sale by artists with disabilities being held at MossRehab Einstein, in Elkins Park, Penna., while the WCD Expo is being held. The exhibit is part of a blend of dance, art, music, and drama, with a variety of sports activities - all exceptional and exhilarating,” Schwaninger added. A main focus of WCD Expo is educational seminars and keynote addresses. One keynote speaker in 2005 was U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha (Dem.- Penna.), who funded and kick-started the Pennsylvania Association of Individuals with Disabilities (PAID) and is the honorary chairman for that organization. According to Mr. Schwaninger, more than 80 authorities will make presentations designed specifically for people with developmental and physical disabilities, their families, and professionals who serve them. “Some of the world’s leading physicians and healthcare experts provide state-of-the-art solutions and therapies, while individuals who have conquered countless obstacles inspire others to defy difficulty and thrive,” said Schwaninger. He predicts this year’s Sports, Recreation, and Arts Center will be of particular interest. “As a result of several television reality shows, the past year has represented a renewed passion for dancing. When WCD Expo attendees see our wheelchair dancers perform, I guarantee overwhelming applause.” WCD Expo segments include Assistive Technology, Home Accessibility & Universal Design, and Accessible Housing & Remodeling pavilions. Also, there will be a Disabilities Career Fair on Friday. There, attendees can seek jobs and meet with disability professionals. WCD Expo is accessible throughout the event. There will be loaner wheelchairs and scooters available, plus accessible parking, drop-off spots and public transportation.
