MedPage Today disclosed that although most people are concerned about skin cancer and think it's important to protect against it, attitudes and behaviors don't reflect concern, results of an American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) online survey showed.
Eight of 10 respondents to the survey - Suntelligence: How Sun Smart is Your City? - expressed concern and 75% said they would do anything to prevent skin cancer. Yet 72% said a tan makes people look more attractive, 66% said it makes people look healthier, and 60% agreed that sun exposure is good for you. The study was done Jan. 12-31 and ranked 26 cities on the "suntelligence" of their residents. Hartford, Salt Lake City, and Denver topped the list; Cleveland, Chicago, and Pittsburgh came in 24, 25, and 26, respectively. Moreover, 28% said they never check moles/other skin blemishes for changes; 59% have never been checked for skin cancer by a healthcare professional, and 70% don’t apply sun block on an average day, contrary to recommendations. The survey measured knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of more than 7,000 adults regarding tanning and skin cancer protection. Among other findings:
