SPECIAL REPORT

posted May 19, 2010

MedPage Today disclosed that although most people are concerned about skin cancer and think it's important to protect against it, attitudes and behaviors don't reflect concern, results of an American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) online survey showed.

Eight of 10 respondents to the survey - Suntelligence: How Sun Smart is Your City? - expressed concern and 75% said they would do anything to prevent skin cancer.  Yet 72% said a tan makes people look more attractive, 66% said it makes people look healthier, and 60% agreed that sun exposure is good for you.

The study was done Jan. 12-31 and ranked 26 cities on the "suntelligence" of their residents.  Hartford, Salt Lake City, and Denver topped the list; Cleveland, Chicago, and Pittsburgh came in 24, 25, and 26, respectively.  Moreover, 28% said they never check moles/other skin blemishes for changes; 59% have never been checked for skin cancer by a healthcare professional, and 70% don’t apply sun block on an average day, contrary to recommendations.

The survey measured knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of more than 7,000 adults regarding tanning and skin cancer protection.  Among other findings:
  • 63% knew tanning beds aren’t safer than tanning outside.
  • 60% knew childhood sun exposure can lead to skin cancer later.
  • 65% didn’t know there are no safe ultraviolet rays; 48% knew getting a base tan doesn’t protect against sun damage; only 21% knew SPF 30 sun block doesn’t provide twice the protection of SPF 15.
To minimize the risk of skin cancer, the AAD urges application and reapplication of at least SPF 30 sunscreen on exposed skin, wearing clothes that minimize exposure to the sun, seeking shade, avoiding tanning beds, and getting screened for skin cancer regularly.
